GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER
The mission of the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is to expand
knowledge of the Earth and its environment, the solar system and the
universe through observations from space. To assure that our nation
maintains leadership in this endeavor, we are committed to excellence in
scientific investigation, in the development and operation of space
systems and in the advancement of essential technologies. GSFC is the
lead Center in NASA's Mission to Planet Earch (MTPE) program. Mission to
Planet Earth is NASA's long term, coordinated research effort ot study
the Earth as a global environment system. The Earth Observing System
(EOS) is the centerpiece of the MTPE and is managed by Goddard. EOS will
feature a series of polar orbiting and low inclination satellites for
global observations of the land surface, biosphere, solid Earth,
atmospheres and oceans. The launch of the first EOS satellite, EOS AM1,
is scheduled for 1998.
The end product of MTPE will be the ability to develop and implement
environmental policies based on the better understanding of how our
environment works. To develop that understanding, MTPE will rely on the
EOS Data and Information Systems (EOSDIS). The EOSDIS has been designed to
archive, manage and distribute MTPE data worldwide. GSFC will guide and
assists the HPDRC in developing the RAC, and will supply the HPDRC with
NASA developed technology and data for validation.
The RAC will render a wealth of information to a wide audience, previously inaccessible and difficult to retrieve. The combination of NASA and local data in the RAC
establishes a unique repository of information directly benefiting a
broad audience consisting of the local community at large, schools,
educators, researchers, industry, and environmental groups.
